I usually like to talk with the client about a few keywords, inspiration, context, etc. Then I send a quite detailed sketch with halt tint shadows to visualize the final rendering. Flats, composition, dynamic lines, etc… help to understand the message and feel the vibe of the artwork. After the client validated that step, I begin working on colors with separated layers, which helps me to readjust precisely some details for the final result.
