With my diploma in Illustration from Bristol Polytechnic I was able to launch myself into the industry with the help of patronage by a handful of editorial art editors keen to employ a technique that up to then had been mainly employed in advertising. Initially, my jobs were entirely black and white but at the end of the nineteen seventies colour became more widely available for publications and I introduced that into my B&W images.
I have worked in scratchboard (in English, that would be ‘scraperboard!’) for over forty years. I was directed to the medium by an early commissioner of my work and I’ve stayed with it ever since as it quickly became the most comfortable way for me to draw.
